Each training consists of roughly 25% lecture, 25% sharing and 50% experiential exercises such as the following:
Interactive Discussions: The trainer will present various topics relevant to high school life and may discuss several varied points of view. The purpose is not to gain agreement or disagreement with what is said, but rather to assist the teens in observing how they relate to these particular subjects. In observing themselves in the training, they can learn about their principles, commitments, and relationships.
Dyads: A dyad is a one-on-one interaction with another student. The teens may be asked to answer a series of questions, tell a story, complete sentences, or participate in short exercises. They will have the opportunity to look directly at personal issues and to support their dyad partners in doing the same.
Mingles: A mingle exercise involves moving around the room while having short interactions with different students. As in dyads, the communication they have with the other students is structured.
Small Group Exercises: During the trainings, the teens will be placed in small groups with an average of 7-8 other students. Through the course of the weekends, they will meet with their small group to discuss and share what they are learning as well as to participate in exercises. Each small group will have one or two Adult Coaches.
Closed Eye Processes: During a closed-eye process the trainer will guide the teens through a creative visualization. Frequently music and the lowering of lights are used to facilitate relaxation and promote creativity.
Games: Games are used to reveal the competitive and cooperative strategies the teens use, and to reveal new ways of looking at life that were previously inaccessible to them.
Sharing: Teens will have the opportunity to learn about themselves and others through communication. They will speak about what they are learning, and listen to the experiences of others. Such sharing occurs one-on-one, in small groups or in front of the group.
Role Playing: Teens may be involved in individual or group role-playing exercises. These are designed to allow them to discover and explore ways of being that are powerful and effective, but which may not be fully expressed in their current daily life.
Interactions with the Trainer: At times teens may have direct interaction with the trainer. The trainer will relate to the teens from the perspective that they are capable of effectively handling the circumstances in their life and that they are committed to extraordinary accomplishments. The trainer will also ask them to take personal responsibility rather than being powerless in the face of life’s obstacles. Interactions with the trainer are opportunities for them to examine the limitations of their past-based worldview.
Homework: At the close of each day teens will be given a homework assignment to be completed before the training the next day begins. The homework is designed to continue discovery, bring greater clarity to what they are learning, and prepare them for the next day’s session.
Food and Rest: During the weekend trainings, it is important that teens get sufficient rest and food. Every 2 to 4 hours there will be a 15-30 minute break. Snacks will be available on short breaks. Be sure they eat a sustaining meal each day before arriving at the training. Meals will be on provided on Saturday and Sunday . Please let us know if you will be bringing food for them or if they have food allergies. Make sure they are getting sufficient sleep each day. This is their personal responsibility. Without sufficient food and rest, the training experience will be diminished.
Key Leadership Distinctions: The following topics will be distinguished throughout the 4 training programs listed at the beginning of this document:
Responsibility and Accountability
Intention and Action
Facts and Interpretations
Collaboration and Teamwork
Ground Rules: Important aspects of every organization, activity or game are its rules. These Ground Rules will assist the teens in working cooperatively within a consistent framework. On the first day of the training, the trainer will review the Ground Rules, answer any questions and ask the teens to agree to each of them as a condition for participating in the training. The following ground rules are integral to the success of the trainings. The following are the ground rules for Discover. (Bridge, Breakthrough, and Connect will have their own distinct ground rules to support the unique aspects of those trainings and sessions)
Be on time.
The doors will open to music. When you hear the theme song, you must be seated before it ends. Once you are seated, please stay seated.
Wear your name-tag in a visible place during training. Turn in your name-tag at the end of the day.
Attend the entire session and commit to completing the training you have signed up for.
Maintain absolute confidentiality of other participants’ experiences and the nature of the training Please Note: Life Unleashed Trainings, LLC cannot guarantee confidentiality.
Do not side talk. Ask questions, talk and share only when acknowledged by the trainer or during designated sharing periods.
Do not sit next to someone you are good friends with.
Do not eat, chew gum or drink beverages in the training.
Do not use cell phones or other electronics during the training, except with permission from an Adult Coach. Cell phones are not allowed in the training room.
Do not use alcohol, smoke or use mood-altering drugs prior to coming to the training or during the training.
Do not engage in any new dating relationships from the beginning of Discover through the end of Breakthrough. This is roughly a 6 week period of time. The trainings are meant to be about self discovery and we have found that if you are focused on a new dating relationship this can be disruptive and distracting.
Please continue any doctor prescribed medications at their prescribed intervals.
Notify an Adult Coach if you see or hear of any problem or concern as it occurs.
Treat each student in the training (including yourself) with the utmost respect and dignity.
Participate fully in each process with a “do whatever it takes” level of commitment.
Please note: Not following ANY ground rule MAY result in the student being asked to leave the training.
Participation: Life Unleashed Trainings provide a distinctive learning approach in which participants engage honestly, directly and effectively with issues at the heart of their lives. These trainings address all dimensions of human nature: intellect, emotions, body and spirit. Because the format of the training is experiential, at times participants may have thoughts, feelings or sensations that have not been fully explored. For most teens this is a freeing, exciting and productive learning experience and at times uncomfortable. Each person’s experience is unique and we cannot promise that they will enjoy every process. For example, they may be asked during an exercise to think about a childhood memory, and they may remember something that is difficult or painful. Some teens may wish to avoid any experience of sadness or discomfort. The training should be considered as a whole, with a variety of experiences and emotions that contribute to creating maximum value.
Liability Release: At registration of Discover, you will be asked to sign Life Unleashed Trainings, LLC’s standard liability form. You may request a sample of this form from us at any time. By signing this form you will be agreeing to assume full responsibility for your teens participation in the training, agreeing not to sue Life Unleashed Trainings, LLC and agreeing to settle by arbitration any disputes that may arise.
Refund/Transfer Policy: Tuition can be transferred to a future training with 3 days advance notice. No refunds are available, but may be considered on a case by case basis.
Right to Exclude: The trainer reserves the right throughout any of the trainings to exclude students from the training for any reason.
